The Fishermens Club

From Fishermen's Mission to Eastbourne Celebration Venue

There is considerably more behind the doors of The Fishermen's Club than its nickname, ‘The Fish’, might suggest.

Founded in 1930 as a fishermen's mission, the club has spent nearly a century developing into a major social venue in Eastbourne. Today, its facilities include lounge areas, a ballroom, three-table snooker room, sports bar, conference room, garden and a function room capable of accommodating up to 100 guests.

That variety is what makes The Fishermen's Club particularly interesting as a Party Venue. Instead of hiring one room and asking it to perform every job, organisers have a venue built around different types of social space.

Nearly a Century of Eastbourne Social Life

The Fishermen's Club began with a very different purpose from the birthday parties, meetings and social occasions it can accommodate today.

Its origins date to 1930, when it was established as a mission serving fishermen. Over the decades, ‘The Fish’ developed into a broader social club and became an established part of the local community.

It is now one of the larger members' social clubs on the South Coast, but that original history gives the venue a character that a purpose-built modern function suite simply cannot replicate.

For somebody arranging an event in Eastbourne, it provides the opportunity to hold the occasion somewhere with a long-standing connection to the town.

The Function Room Can Be the Party Headquarters

For private events, the club's function room is one of its most useful facilities, with capacity for up to 100 guests.

That makes it suitable for occasions where you need room for more than the entertainment itself. Children's parties still need seating, food, presents, supervising adults and space for people to circulate.

Where inflatable equipment is being considered, the dimensions and ceiling height of the intended setup area should always be confirmed first. A product being suitable for indoor use does not automatically mean it will fit every function room.

Our Low Height / Indoor section is a useful starting point when searching for equipment intended for venues where vertical clearance matters.

What Kind of Children's Party Could Work at The Fish?

For younger guests, the entertainment does not necessarily need to dominate the whole room.

A suitable Bouncy Castle can provide the main attraction while retaining space for everything else happening at the party. For toddlers and preschool children, Soft Play And Juggler Ball Pond equipment offers a different style of play altogether.

If the available room and ceiling dimensions allow it, Bouncy Castle & Soft Play Packages can be particularly useful for family parties involving children of different ages.

Instead of expecting a toddler and an energetic eight-year-old to enjoy exactly the same activity, separate play options can give each group somewhere more appropriate to spend its time.

Then the Adults Have Somewhere to Be Adults

One advantage of holding a family occasion at an established social club is that the building has been designed with adults in mind too.

The Fishermen's Club includes spacious lounge areas and a sports bar, alongside its dedicated function facilities. That gives the venue a very different feel from hiring a basic empty hall solely because there is enough floor space for a children's party.

The club also has a three-table snooker room, adding another element to a venue already built around recreation and socialising.

For a family celebration, this broader range of facilities can matter. The children might be chiefly interested in the entertainment, but a successful event also needs to work for the parents, grandparents and other adults attending.

The Ballroom Tells You Something About the Scale of the Club

A large ballroom is not something you find at every Eastbourne party venue.

The Fishermen's Club uses this substantial space for live entertainment and other events, reinforcing the fact that ‘The Fish’ operates on a larger scale than a small neighbourhood meeting room.

For organisers considering substantial entertainment, however, room size is only the beginning of the calculation.

If you are interested in Inflatable Games, Inflatable Assault Courses or a Bouncy Castle Slide Combo, the individual equipment dimensions, ceiling clearance, access and operating requirements all need to be checked against the particular space being hired.

Never assume that a large room automatically makes every large inflatable suitable.

Children Outside, Celebration Inside?

The club's garden introduces another possibility during suitable weather.

An event does not necessarily have to remain entirely indoors. Depending on the area available, ground conditions, access and the club's current arrangements, an outdoor space can give family events another place for guests to spend time.

That can change the rhythm of a summer celebration considerably. Rather than everybody occupying the same function room for several hours, guests may be able to move between indoor and outdoor areas.

Any outdoor inflatable installation would still need an appropriate setup area and safe weather conditions. See Outdoor Party Hire for more ideas or read What to Do If the Weather Turns on Your Party Day before making the entire plan dependent on sunshine.

Not Every Event Here Needs a Bouncy Castle

The Fishermen's Club's conference facilities, ballroom and social spaces mean it can host occasions with a very different character from a children's birthday.

For corporate or organised events, entertainment could instead involve appropriate Inflatable Games or Sports Games, adding an activity to a wider programme rather than making an inflatable the centre of the occasion.

Cookes Castles also provides entertainment for Corporate Events & Company Fun Days, Charity Events and suitable Community & Council Events.

That makes the club worth considering for family fun days, fundraisers and social events as well as conventional private parties.

A 100-Person Capacity Does Not Mean 100 People Around One Inflatable

Venue capacity and entertainment capacity are two different things.

If you are organising a larger function, think about how guests will actually use the space. A hundred-person event may include children of several ages, adults who do not want to participate and guests arriving or leaving at different times.

Rather than trying to make one attraction serve everybody, it can be better to consider how different activities fit into the wider event.

Our Inflatable Hire for Mixed Age Groups guide explores this in more detail, while How to Entertain at Big Events contains advice for occasions where entertainment needs to work for a larger audience.

Planning an Inflatable Hire at The Fishermen's Club

Because The Fish contains several very different spaces, the name of the venue alone is not enough information for us to recommend an inflatable.

Before choosing equipment, establish which room or outdoor area you are hiring. Then confirm its usable dimensions, ceiling height where relevant and the route we would use to bring the equipment into position.

For indoor installations, remember to account for:

  • the actual width, length and height of the inflatable;
  • the additional operating clearance required around it;
  • ceiling fittings, lights and other overhead obstructions;
  • tables, chairs and other furniture required during the event;
  • clear entrances, exits and circulation routes;
  • access from our delivery vehicle to the setup position; and
  • enough time before and after the event for installation and removal.

A Different Kind of Eastbourne Party Venue

The Fishermen's Club has something that cannot be added to a venue by putting up balloons and decorations: history.

From its beginnings as a fishermen's mission in 1930 to its present role as a substantial Eastbourne social club, The Fish has spent generations providing somewhere for local people to meet.

Its ballroom, function room, lounge areas, sports bar, conference room, snooker facilities and garden now give event organisers several possibilities under one roof.

If your plans include younger guests, explore Bouncy Castles, Soft Play And Juggler Ball Pond and Low Height / Indoor. For a broader event, browse Inflatable Games or see All Our Products.
